The largest producer and consumer of nitrogen fertilizer in the world is now China. On average Chinese farmers apply 40 percent more nitrogen fertilizer per acre than farmers in the USA. Some of this additional amount can be attributed to the fact that farmers in the south of China can double crop, but some of the difference is just waste and harmful to the environment. Globally, the take-home message about nitrogen fertilizer is that Africa doesn't have enough, the USA uses too much and China uses way too much.
