Forest, Stone Mountain, GA. Photo by @peteressick. This photo was taken in my backyard forest last Saturday during an iPhone photo workshop that I was leading for Jr. High students. We set up an Instagram site for the four students and myself to post our efforts at @jrhighphoto. Not all of the best photos have been posted yet, but I have been amazed at the work of the students. It is humbling - but it also makes me proud - to say I was outshot by all of these extraordinary students and human beings from The Paideia School in Atlanta. The iPhone really is an extraordinary tool for self -expression that makes it possible for kids to learn and experience the joys of photography at a young age. My photo was an attempt to try to capture the chaos of nature, a feeling I get most often when I am walking or photographing inside a forest. Things seem pretty chaotic looking up to the forest canopy. However, my understanding of the Chaos Theory by James Gleick is that the forest is not all a random mess (even if my photo might be). If you have enough information and computing power, one could explain the position of every tree, every leaf and the cause and effect runs on a linear fashion. This is the so-called "butterfly-flapping-it's -wings-in-the-Amazon-causes-a-flood-in-Florida effect." Remarkably, nature works this way, and the theory has been tested scientifically to be true. It makes me think that wild nature is not understood as well as it needs to be by us humans, and that we could use the lessons from Mother Nature for positive gain and effects. Or as John Muir said, "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."
