Naturally, a major attraction of the new Azabudai Hills, which opened on Friday, will be the dozens of shopping and dining spots, a carefully curated selection that highlights the high end of refined tradition and modernity.

Not all stories have opened their doors yet but ultimately the complex will host around 150 shops. offering fashion, food, cosmetics and more.

Azabudai Hills Market, underneath the Central Green Area, is slated to open in January and will showcase fresh produce and Tokyo’s rich food culture.

From February, Azabudai Hills will launch a luxury brand street including the likes of Hermes, Cartier, Dior and more.

The overall design concept of Azabudai Hills, produced by mega real estate developer Mori Building, highlights a balance between gleaming high-rises, designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners, and the lower-level districts filled with waves of greenery.

The approach — a departure from traditional urban development practices — is part of Mori Building’s “Vertical Garden City” concept, which prioritizes eco-friendly development and challenges the traditional vision of hard-edged city living.
