After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese and Japanese Americans faced substantial discrimination, and in some cases, forced relocation. They were also barred from serving in the U.S. military. However, in early 1943, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was activated as a unit consisting primarily of Japanese Americans. Later that year, the WAC opened enlistment to Japanese American women.   Kono enlisted out of a sense of loyalty and patriotism that same year. Her duties were vast, ranging from driver and mechanic to communications and public affairs. She also trained as a military intelligence service linguist, translating material sent from the Pacific while stationed at Fort Ritchie, Maryland.
