An adult male can gain over 100 pounds in a few weeks when acorn and other nut production is heavy. At @shenandoahnps, these bears thrive on the park's mast-producing trees, like oak and hickory trees, that generate a lot of tasty nuts — one of the bears' favorite foods! A bear may put on 3 to 5 pounds per day while spending 20 hours foraging. This phase, called "hyperphagia," means obsessive eating and is all in preparation for a long winter without much food. Sometime between October and January, they'll enter their winter dens in hollow trees, snags, rock crevices, brush piles and ground excavations. Shenandoah’s bears do not truly hibernate since they may leave the den briefly if disturbed or during brief warming trends.
