🎃 Which critter has the spookiest name? To kick off Halloweekend, here are a few of our top picks!

1. Ghost bat (Macroderma gigas): This Australian species preys on reptiles, large insects, small mammals, birds, and frogs. Its name is a nod to the pale color of its fur. When on the hunt, the ghost bat swoops down from above, wraps its meal in its wings, and then bites down on the head and neck.

2.Satanic leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus phantasticus): Found in Madagascar’s rainforests, this reptile is a master of disguise. It specializes in mimicking dry leaves—down to its jagged tail, which looks like it’s rotting or has been chewed. When threatened, this critter opens its bright red mouth for a shocking display.

3.Vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis): Inhabiting depths of up to 4,000 ft (1,200 m) where the Sun never shines, this squid is rarely seen. When threatened, it can eject bioluminescent mucus from the tips of its tentacles before making an escape.

4.Death’s-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos): This moth is known for the eerie pattern on its back, which resembles a skull. But despite the ominous appearance, this critter is harmless! It feeds on nectar and honey from beehives: Thick skin protects it from stingers, and the ability to chemically mimic a bee’s scent allows this moth to climb right into beehives to plunder honey.

5.Halloween crab (Gecarcinus lateralis): This crustacean is clad in Halloween colors of orange, purple, and black. Also known as the purple moon crab, it shelters in underground burrows during the day and emerges to feed at night. This species has a wide range along the coasts of Central and South America.
