Words by @tamaramerino_photography | For two full days we searched in the San Rafael Glacier located in the Northern Ice Field for a small animal named the Patagonian dragon (Andiperla Sp.), which is a species native to the regions of Aysén and Magallanes, which does not exceed 15 millimeters, and lives all its life in ice matrices, and generates a glycerol-based fluid to avoid freezing.

The Patagonian dragon is a flightless plecopteran that is intolerant to pollution and its presence is an indicator of excellent water quality. But in this huge mass of ice, white and shimmering, looking for a 15mm animal is more difficult than finding a needle in a haystack. Luckily we were with Andrea Carretta, 45 years old, Italian high mountain ranger and military mountaineering instructor, who patiently joined us to enter every cave and crevice in his search. It was pouring rain, and when the Patagonian Dragon heard the crunching sound of the crampons, they hid even more. But finally in the last hour of daylight one appeared! It quickly disappeared from the frame of my camera while I photographed it with a macro lens to get all the detail of its incredible water-repellent body that withstands extreme temperatures. Finding it was exciting and not only for the insatiable search we did, but also for witnessing something so wonderful, as its presence alone is the living proof that Chilean glaciers are 100% pure and pristine.
