Kaedama can be free or may cost. Some restaurants allow a free refill. It all depends on the individual ramen shop!

Here’s how ‘kaedama’ is written in kanji, hiragana, and romaji:
替え - かえ - kae >> from the verb kaeru - to replace.
玉 - だま - dama - ball >> たま - tama - means ball but changes to だま - dama when it's preceded by another word.
