As part of the story about nitrogen fertilizer I photographed the famous mermaid show held underwater at Weeki Watchee Springs. When the show started in 1947 there was native eelgrass growing on the bottom. Now, as a result of development and the runoff of fertilizer from all the lawns, the nitrogen levels have gone up considerably in all the springs in North Florida. This causes the growth of algae seen behind the mermaid, which pushes out the native species. This photo was taken while the show was going on and I was in scuba gear crouching down below the viewing window. The mermaids have to train for a year before being able to do the show.
