Algae Bloom, Lake Erie,USA. Photo by @peteressick. Today I spoke my son's 7 th grade class. Jalen introduced me to the class and it doesn't get any better than that for a father. I talked for 1 1/2 hours and I'm glad I was showing mostly landscape photos. It may be a cliche that nature photos have a calming effect, but I proved it to myself once again today. I did show some of my environmental photos to the class and this photo from an upcoming story on nitrogen fertilizer caught the kids' attention. I took this picture on Sept. 1, 2011 and there was a large algae bloom in Lake Erie. The bloom comes from excess nitrogen that runs off into the lake from the many farm fields in the region of the corn belt. I was asked is the lake really this green? Really? What must a 7th grader think we are doing to this Great Lake?
