Daniel Lopatin, who recently released his 10th album as Oneohtrix Point Never, has built a career writing elegiac, otherworldly electronic compositions using computers, synthesizers, and digital scree. He is credited as being one of the early practitioners of vaporwave, a genre of electronic music obsessed with aestheticizing relics of the recent past. The resulting sound is “eerie and inconstant,” @amandapetrusich writes—“more dream than memory.” For more than a decade, Lopatin has been a highly regarded composer within electronic-music circles, and worshipped in certain corners of the Internet. But recently he has become the person pop stars call when their records are getting boring, rote, or predictable. Lopatin has collaborated with the Weeknd, FKA Twigs, Caroline Polachek, Rosalía, and Charli XCX, among others. “Dan’s a sensitive person who’s also really interested in exploring the absolute upper limits of what’s possible creatively,” James Blake said.
