In the immediate aftermath of the fire that took Lahaina town, Kaipo Kekona, Rachel Kapu, Tamara Paltin, and other local Maui residents rapidly stood up one of the first community-led hubs at Nāpili Park.

Nāpili Noho has come a long way in a little over a month’s time. It now includes things like medical care, job assistance, mobile learning labs, a general store, a grocery store, lomilomi, psychological and spiritual counseling, keiki and kupuna care, computers and internet connectivity, a receiving area and intake system for supply drops from organizations large and small, a notary, off grid energy systems, a command center, and spaces for grieving and healing.

It’s a short term solution with long term impacts as it is also a space where people and practices connect with place, relationships are strengthened, and visions of what could be are brought into the light.

What could the restoration and rebuilding of Lahaina — also affectionately known as Lele — look like?

@kaipokekona of @napilinoho shares a few initial thoughts on what many in Lahaina are talking about, Ka Malu ’Ulu o Lele, taking us on a journey into the past where we can begin to see visions of the future. Workforce housing, clean energy, agriculture, healthy ‘āina that regenerates the community and reduces the risk of fires, circular economies, regenerative industry, living wage jobs, people power over corporate power? Hiki paha.

What can we learn by looking to the wisdom of our ancestors? What kinds of solutions to today’s challenges can be brought to life?

As a farmer, he’s frequently working with the ’āina, planting seeds in the soil. Today, he’s planting seeds in the hearts and minds of those whoʻll listen. And as the Maui County Council is set to meet on September 27 to talk about recovery and resiliency, we hope they’ll be listening to people like Kaipo, too.

Hālau Lahaina, malu i ka ’ulu.
Lahaina is a great place of learning, peace, protection, and abundance.

Lahaina is like a large hale shaded by breadfruit trees.
