Photos by @stevewinterphoto | I had learned that there was a healthy population of leopards in the center of one of the largest cities in the world: Mumbai, India. They numbered around 50 and lived in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the highest density found anywhere on Earth. In 2014, I wanted to show readers that humans and leopards could live together—and had for decades, centuries even. To do this I had to capture a leopard walking across this bridge and the apartment buildings behind it in the same image. I had seen video done in infrared, but it did not look real. In order to show urban wildlife, we needed a real moment of leopard and human habitation together. It took months, but I got it. I had a 40-foot (12-m) bamboo tower built so my camera would be at the same height as the bridge.
Throughout my career, I have wanted to show my editor, the director of photography, and the editor in chief something they had never seen before. This was it.
