Exactly fourteen summers ago, I was living overseas between jobs, learning a new language, discovering new ways of eating while developing a new relationship with land, animals, and myself. It led me down a path of recognizing the interconnectedness that exists between all areas I cared deeply about, from understanding our food system, to root causes of disease, factory farming, and eventually my discovery of regenerative agriculture. At the time regen ag wasn’t a term used as often as it is now, but the mission was just as clear. Healthy soil makes for healthy…everything. We can choose to focus on labels, seeking out what is organic, or vegan, or paleo, or local, or biodynamic, but the truth is in grasping for labels we are all striving for the same thing…health. Our health (humans), their health (animals), its health (land/Earth/soil) -they are all the same thing. My passion for clean eating led me first down the rabbit hole of researching pesticides, and suddenly I realized we couldn’t talk about our own personal health without understanding how undeniably intertwined our health is with the others. If one goes down, we all go down, and it became crystal clear to me that we humans were both the problem AND the solution. I became obsessed with learning about solutions to climate change, took college courses on innovation and water conservation, read books and articles on holistic land management, and made many personal changes within my own life to do what “I thought” was my best to contribute to a healthier planet. And then somewhere in my early 20’s, through my journey to healthier eating, I met @lovebeingryland (KTG), + @joshtickell and @beccatickell the brilliant minds behind @kisstheground and now @commonground films and realized the solution was RIGHT THERE at our fingertips.
