Here’s a lil nature nerd info on this lush forest: The Thain Family Forest has never been clear-cut, allowing it to reach a mature stage of development. The forest’s age, along with its diversity of flora, habitat and thriving wildlife populations, contributes to its classification as an old-growth forest. This 50-acre plot of trees is the largest surviving remnant of the city’s original woodland aka the largest forest (not the only!) in NYC that doesn’t have a history of ever being cleared. This expanse has shown remarkable resilience over the years, reminding us how nature persists even in the a highly populated city with the support of NYBG and other partners. The forest boasts a diverse range of tree species, including oak, hickory, maple, beech, and tulip trees. Since its establishment, the New York Botanical Garden has diligently preserved and protected this natural haven.
