I had thought Tezuka's episode of making an illustrated book of insects by himself in his childhood was just an indication of his love of insects. But during the war, smart and sensitive children understood the realities of the carnage that was unfolding according to adult logic, and if they took them all on, they would have a mental breakdown, so they focused on the realism of the small world in front of them as a way to protect themselves from such a state. As I watched Mahito's obsession with the egret and the wonders deep in the garden, that’s what occurred to me. Perhaps that’s why Tezuka used the character for "insect" in his pen name...and so forth. Come to think of it, Tezuka's contemporaries (or not-quite contemporaries), Hayao Miyazaki and Takeshi Yoro, are very close friends, and Takeshi Yoro's obsession with insects is also out of the ordinary. I wondered if this was the kind of self-preservation technique devised by sensitive children during the war.... I saw the film in IMAX and Dolby, both with extremely detailed and refined sound effects and a strong focus on the micro-world, such as realistic cawing of Japanese crows and the sounds of scenes in the bushes, etc. I was able to immerse myself in the soundscape and dream about Mahito's mental state.
