Back in April of this year, Ambassador Michael Telstad made his Alaska debut. He and two friends gathered in the dark of night over beers and a cauldron (aka midday coffee, Zoom, and CalTopo) to craft their master plan — attempt to climb a new route on the 4,500’ NE buttress of Augustin peak. To the best of the group’s knowledge, this would be just the third ascent of Augustin, a mountain nestled in the Kichatna Mountains of the Alaska Range. The Kichatna are most known for their distinct granite spires that stretch like rocky fingers high into the vast Alaskan sky.
