ウォーク・ザ・ムーンさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ウォーク・ザ・ムーンInstagram)「part one: the people saved WALK THE MOON. by Christmas 2009, our lineup of band members had gone thru several incarnations already. the latest members (dear college friends, with whom i wrote the first versions of songs like Anna Sun) had just gone their separate ways for separate reasons. before they’d left, we’d had a hard conversation. they helped me to see i’d been avoiding my family situation. Dad’s Alzheimer’s was getting worse, and i needed to accept that and step up as the man in the family. support my mother and help take care of my father. their words were wisdom, tough love. they were good friends. and now they were gone. i strongly considered calling it quits. it had already been four-and-a-half years of playing as many shows as we could during summer breaks and on weekends at college. band battles, bar gigs, busking outside the aquarium. we’d built a little following… some kids in Cincinnati, students at colleges around Ohio + Indiana, whoever else had found us on Myspace… still, we were nobody. every gig had been a hustle. we definitely weren’t making any money. and now i had no bandmates. by all logic WALK THE MOON should have died that Christmas. instead, something possessed me to hold on. a sort of deranged certainty took over me. i decided my band was gonna get signed and blow up. i just knew it would happen, eventually. play enough gigs, collect enough emails, hand out enough burned CDs, and it was inevitable. just a matter of time. and so, with a defiant, reckless, quirky fervor, i began making my comeback. pretending to be a band manager, i booked a dozen gigs at venues who were expecting a rock band. of course, i had no band members, but the venues didn’t know that. what i did have was songs. i figured, if i had songs, whoever could learn to play them could be in WALK THE MOON for the night. so i started going to see other bands in town… i’d catch a show on Wednesday, see a guitar player i liked enough, go up to him after the show, and ask him if he wanted play in my show on Saturday. it was madness like this for about a year. if you came to a WALK THE MOON show in 2010...
