We’d see each other on the international fencing circuit, when we were the only Black women (along with my sister Faizah). She fenced for the French National Team, but no matter the world cup, whichever country we were in, we were at each other’s strip to cheer each other on. When I got the call to fence in Parris Goebel’s show for Nike, I knew Susu was the perfect partner. She also wears hijab and I knew it would be a powerful moment to have two hijabis fence in the show during fashion week, in France— a country that actively works to ban the hijab in sports. It was a full circle moment. I love that our friendship has grown and that it was our shared faith that brought us together.
