What's in the bags? Shark dandruff, a flaky gift to science. 🦈 Sharks shed tiny scales called denticles as they swim. Using paint brushes and microscopes, @smithsonianpanama's Erin Dillon combed through sediment from fossilized reefs in Panama to find ancient denticles.
They needed a lot, enough to fill two bathtubs, to piece together the fossil record and compare shark dandruff levels past and present. 🛁
Humans kill millions of sharks each year, disrupting ocean food chains. This research could help scientists at @smithsonianpanama and beyond tailor shark conservation goals.
