East Baltimore was home to many immigrant groups, including Polish Americans who often came together at St. Casimir’s.    This photo by Elinor Cahn, a lifelong Baltimorean, was taken as part of a National Endowment of the Arts photography survey to document America during the country’s 200th anniversary. Cahn's photos capture daily life of many communities in East Baltimore during a time of change—prayers at the local synagogue, women working on the assembly line at American Can Company, a festival in Little Italy, and the annual “I Am an American Day” parade.   Memorial Day, once known as Decoration Day, became an annual tradition after the Civil War. From local parades to somber remembrances, many communities across the country come together each year to honor those who died in military service.
