Artiom Cernijenko is a Principal Scientist on NIBR’s Global Discovery Chemistry team, where he uses a creative approach in chemistry called protein degradation to help develop new drugs, primarily for cancer indications. Protein degradation seeks to hijack machinery in the body that acts as a sort of natural garbage disposal system to get rid of proteins that are either misfolded or mutated and are contributing to disease.

We asked Artiom what he likes most about his work:

“One thing I like about my work is that it satisfies my desire for creative expression, because chemical space is virtually limitless. When you’re solving a problem in drug discovery, it’s usually novel and there are no written rules. How you solve it is for you to figure out. You can design and make molecules of almost any three-dimensional shape, size, or sequence of atoms – and it will most likely be the first time such a molecule has been born into reality.

The hope is always that this new molecule will become a medicine that will improve human health. That is very difficult to achieve of course, but each molecule you create contributes to scientific knowledge and brings us a step closer to creating a drug that will benefit patients.”
