Wow, is right! @erykahbadu—who also goes by, as our recent March 2023 cover star tells us, “She ill”— has made reinvention a mainstay of her decades-spanning career. There are particular moments in Badu’s retrospective that represent growth and celebration—like when she hit the runway for the first time at #VogueWorld in New York last year. “My first runway ever, period,” Badu said. “I always thought I was too short to do runway, so I didn’t even think about it.” Another pinch-me moment was appearing on the cover of Vogue. The photo was one of the last images taken that day, during what Badu calls “the golden hour.”

“I felt like I was seen,” she says, “I felt like I was recognized for how passionate and serious my love for fashion and art is. That’s me, that’s Erykah from South Dallas on the cover of Vogue.”
