Aldabra's mangrove forests serve as nursery habitats and refuges for juvenile marine life. That also makes them rich hunting grounds for larger denizens of the lagoon, including blacktip reef sharks that swim in and out of the submerged trees. The tides racing in and out of the mangroves twice a day turn the channels into raging white-water rivers and time for underwater photography is very limited. An image like this can really only be made during 30 minute windows a few times every month. My work at remote and challenging locations such as Aldabra required many months of extensive pre-planning, otherwise many of my best photographs from this story would have never been created, remaining tantalizingly just out of reach.
