Bashizi’s coach is Balezi Bagunda (second photo), a Congolese boxer and former child soldier who goes by the name Kibomango. In 1997 Kibomango joined the resistance led by Laurent Kabila and walked across the country to oust dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in Kinshasa. Kibomango lost his left eye while fighting, but that didn’t stop him from becoming the national boxing champion in 2008. Today he teaches young women and men, some of them former child soldiers, to box.
