In February, Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle crossed the Coral Sea, off the coast of Australia, passing over the shallow Bellona Plateau.

The Bellona Plateau was a sizeable island during the Pleistocene ice ages but is now submerged under water. The plateau hosts a wide variety of marine life, including reefs and corals.

Gabrielle’s fierce winds stirred up enough carbonate sediment from the reefs to temporarily discolor 13,000 square kilometers of the water around the plateau.

Image Descriptions:
Image 1: A satellite image of the ocean. The eastern coast of Australia is a jagged green mass that can slightly be seen in the bottom left corner. The ocean is a very dark blue, almost black, except for slightly right of the center point, where a clump of wispy, light blue sediment appears in the water. Clouds cover most of the top half of the image and are also scattered above the water.

Image 2: The same image as before, but significantly zoomed in. The background of the ocean is very dark blue, almost black. From the right of the image into the center is the light blue wispy sediment. At the edges of the main portion of sediment, it wanes off in wispier swirls and loops.
