Mari Matsuoka, a first-time election contender, represents the growing ranks of mothers seeking to get involved in Japanese politics. Politics here has long been considered the domain of those who are capable of committing to the duty 24/7, marginalizing the voices of families with young children. That reality remains in place despite Prime Minister Fumio Kishida putting more support for children and measures against depopulation at the center of his policy agenda.

This month’s elections mark the first polls in which candidates can take their underage children on the campaign trail without having to worry so much about violating the Public Offices Election Law.

“I want to help create a society where everyone can live happily without being stretched to the limit,” Matsuoka said from the bench, which has become her favorite campaign spot because sitting eases the burden on her postpartum body. Link to story in our bio. 📸 Tomoko Otake
