The Winning Entries of the National Parks of Japan Photo Contest 📸

Last year, the Ministry of the Environment, in collaboration with the Tokyo Camera Club, organized a photo contest focusing on the national parks. The contest’s theme was "Encountering Stories. Japan's National Parks." We received many photos that beautifully captured this theme. Today, we’re introducing the three photos selected for the Grand Prize, Excellence Prize, and Special Prize.

🏆 Grand Prize
"Shinpi no Asa" (Mysterious morning)

Towada-Hachimantai National Park
To preserve the spectacular natural environment of Tsutanuma for future generations, a reservation system has been introduced to ease congestion during the busy autumn foliage period. As well, an initiative has begun to collect a voluntary fee to be used for environmental protection.

🏆Excellence Prize
"Yukyu no Daichi ni Idakarete" (Embraced by the everlasting earth)
Jin Ishibashi

Aso-Kuju National Park
The park is home to the largest remaining grassland in Japan. Kusasenri, pictured, is a unique area where visitors can freely enter the grassland.

🏆 Special Prize
"2011 Daishinsai-go no Hatsu Shussen" (First launch after the Great East Japan Earthquake)
Naoaki Konishi

Sanriku Fukko (reconstruction) National Park
This photo captures a scene during the hikifune (boat launch) event at a festival in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture. The festival, held eight years after the earthquake, was the first since the disaster and was held to pray for a big catch and the safety of the fishing industry. The local people watching over the boats in the rain made for a memorable scene.

We hope that these photos give you a sense of the variety of stories that you'll find in the National Parks of Japan. 😄
