Lake McArthur, Yoho NP, Canada. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. The Group of Seven were Canadian landscape painters who worked together from 1920 to 1933. They were from the Ontario area, but travelled throughout Canada sometimes working for the Canadian Pacific Railways. They were all modernists, and looked to wild nature for inspiration and for their subject matter. Their work has stood the test of time very well and has influenced many artists to this day. One of the members, James MacDonald, did a painting of Lake McArthur in 1924. His painting is stunning, and portrays the lake in early season with snow on the shoreline and with a much larger glacier on the mountain behind the lake than is visible now. My photograph was taken just as the last rays of sun hit two very old larches and a waxing moon was rising in the background.
