Hungabee Lake, Opabin Plateau, Yoho NP, Canada. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Opabin Plateau was named by American mountaineer Samuel Allen in 1894. Opabin means "rocky" in the Stoney language. Allen also named Hungabee Lake which means "chieftain"(as an aside, Edward Curtis photographed members of the Stoney tribe for his 20-volume masterpiece The North American Indian). The plateau is surrounded by many high peaks, all of which provide a dramatic backdrop for several lakes below. The limestone bedrock is polished by the work of glaciers past, and the high sub-alpine meadows are filled with larch, spruce and fir trees. The larches dominate, and in the autumn turn from green to yellow to gold before going brown and losing their needle-like leaves in the wind. In midday, the larches glow in the backlight until about 4pm and then the peaks catch the evening light. Overall, the air is usually crisp, the water is clean and the effect magical, like watching Mother Nature put on a flawless performance. In my job with NG, I have been fortunate to have travelled to all seven continents and the have photographed in some of the world's most beautiful places, but if you were to plop me down on the Opabin Plateau in the last week of September, I can't think of many other places I would rather be.
