Kicking Horse River, Yoho NP, Canada. Photo by@peteressick on assignment for @natgeo. If the super-efficient office worker of today is one who can type and talk on the telephone at the same time, all while scanning e-mails, Facebook, twitter and instagram all in almost real time, the successful NG photographer is often one who can effectively manage their gear. During my time here in Yoho NP, besides hiking and sleeping and maybe photographing, I've probably spent the most time sorting gear. Overall, I travel light compared to many of the NG photographers that I know. My basic kit is two camera bodies, three lenses and a tripod. But once you start to do more specialized work, the equipment list grows. I wanted to try to do some underwater photos in a glacial lake, so that meant bringing and underwater housing, a full wet suit, weight belt and mask. I also wanted to do some wildlife photos, so that meant bringing a 500mm telephoto. This photo of the Kicking Horse River was one of the few that I could do within walking distance of a road. Most of the best locations in Yoho can only be accessed by backpacking to them, so this required bringing a backpack, sleeping bag, tent, pad, stove, tent, dehydrated food, etc. When I flew to Calgary at the start of the assignment, I was able to get all the gear into three 50-pound bags along with my cameras and laptop in my carry-on. All my gear fits into a sedan rental car, and I have a locked case in the trunk. I keep the most expensive cameras and lens as well as the hard drives in the locked box. Therein lies the main issue concerning gear, what to bring each day, what to leave, and how to keep what you leave behind secure. That is where all the sorting comes in. One would think a photographer spends all their time thinking about how to make great pictures. I do that sometimes, but often I am thinking about whether I have the right gear for the task at hand. It seems that when it comes to gear, one can maximize or minimize, but a photographer and their gear will always have a close connection.
