Yuri Shimojo is one of
the artists featured in our Independent Art Fair presentation, opening May 5. For the first time, the artist will exhibit her acclaimed Sumi and Shu original paintings, some of which date to as early as 2000.

To provide a little context, enjoy this 10 minute short film by Toddy Stewart. Made in 2016, it gives insight into Shimojo's artistic practice.

In Sumi and Shu, the artist grinds sumi (black) and shu (cinnabar) ink sticks from Japan. The grinding gives her control over the saturation of the colors. A short scene in this film shows her using Western black ink for a doodle, but note that this ink is not used for the original paintings.
