#OTD in 1945, Cpl. Hershel “Woody” Williams earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima while serving with 3rd Marine Division.

Williams, 98, is the only surviving Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient from World War II. In 2020, the USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB-4) ,a Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary mobile base, was commissioned in his honor.
