Some Gave All

On this Throwback Thursday, we’re going back to Feb. 28, 1967, when Pfc. James Anderson Jr.’s bravery and heroism in Vietnam earned him the Medal of Honor.

During a mission to extract a reconnaissance patrol, Anderson’s platoon had advanced only about 200 meters when his patrol started to receive extremely intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. His platoon reacted swiftly, getting on line as best it could in the thick terrain, and began returning fire.

Anderson found himself tightly bunched together with the other members of the platoon only 20 meters from the enemy positions. As the firefight continued several of the Marines were wounded by the deadly enemy assault.

Suddenly, an enemy grenade landed amid the Marines and rolled alongside Anderson’s head. Unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he reached out, grasped the grenade, pulled it to his chest and curled around it as it went off. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

When his Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded on Aug. 21, 1968, he became the first African American Marine recipient of it.
