did a short reading of an excerpt from my essay ‘ode to oba’ about my relationship with Japanese grandma from the forthcoming @eastsidevoices anthology edited by @hels_lee for @betweentwobooks ♥️

the book is a super rich and beautiful exploration on the incredible spectrum of experience of the the south-east Asian diaspora in the UK today and I feel so honoured to be featured alongside so many great humans like @rowanhisa @ジェンマ・チャン @maryjeanchan @miss_zing @awongsw1 @thats.so.june @catherinekcho and so many more 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I wrote this essay when I could barely use my hands due to the chronic pain I was experiencing and at times had to resort to dictating word by word to the lovely Helena just to get it down but I felt the immense need to just to keep going. It was the somatic intuitive knowledge within all of us kicking in for me as she ended up leaving us within a few months of finishing this piece. This essay helped me to begin to prepare for the inevitable and became my way of getting to say goodbye, so thank you @hels_lee for giving me the space to begin to do that work.
