Yesterday was my first day,and I felt excited and honoured to actually be part of this historical event. The Olympics taking place in the city one lives in is not something that happens everyday. I knew I wanted to take part in this once in a life time opportunity and applied 2yrs ago. I wouldn’t have had been able to participate if the event was last year since I was still weak from being infected with COVID19 in the spring. I was unsure about what to do this year, not just from the spread of the virus but also doubts in Japan about the event itself. But I decided I wanted to contribute after all. First, because I think Japan owed it to the world to do its best to make TOKYO2020 a quality event. The Olympic Games belong to the people and athletes of the world, and since Japan volunteered to be the host, we cannot give up. Second, because I wanted athletes and team members from the 200+ countries that made it here to Tokyo in spite of this pandemic to feel glad that they came and to leave with a good impression of Tokyo and Japan. I’ve lived and traveled to many countries and places, and experienced that it’s often little things that determine the overall impression of a place, if you love or hate a city, like meeting a kind citizen, or eating something really delicious, or being deeply moved by the sound of the language or the beauty of the city vibes. I want to contribute, although very trivial what one person can do, but I still want to contribute to the overall happiness and positiveness of this event. So I am volunteering. During the Olympic Games I will be working in the Olympic Village (which in itself is very exciting), helping with the certificates and medal cases that are handed to the winners.
