Photo by @stevewinterphoto / It took three days for this Asian elephant to die after being shot by a villager in Assam, India. The animal was forced out of Kaziranga National Park by monsoon flooding and was killed for crossing through crop fields. The shot didn't kill the elephant; the bullet had been soaked in acid, and the animal eventually died from septic poisoning. Here, a man prays in front of the animal’s body. The Hindu elephant-headed deity Lord Ganesh is a patron of intellectuals and is believed to remove obstacles. This was a tough photo to take but the respect this man and several villagers showed the elephant moved me to tears.
