This photographic work titled ‘Shorja Street, Baghdad, 1960’ by Latif Al Ani (b.1932, Iraq) is a street view of a mosque next to a building by Iraqi architect Rifat Chadirji, who designed more than 100 buildings across Iraq including the Tobacco Monopoly Headquarters and the Central Post Office in Baghdad. Latif Al Ani’s images are an extensive and invaluable archive of a shifting socio-political, economic and cultural landscape in Iraq during the late 1950s and early 1970s. Al Ani captured the ever-evolving state of prosperity occurring in Iraq at the time, showing high speed urbanisation, cultural initiatives and social life, as well as the coexistence of old and new. His images show archaeological sites of the first civilisations juxtaposed with newly established modernist monuments and architectural pursuits. Al Ani was inspired by a desire to capture the contrast between the past and present, and to preserve heritage in the face of modernising forces.

Join us on 2 and 9 March for three free online sessions which will discuss Al Ani’s work alongside other architectural histories. The seminar will bring together scholars, researchers and curators to explore architectural production in the blurred era of independence to the post-colonial period of the mid-20th century, focussing on cities in Africa, Middle East and South Asia. The event is free and open to all. If you'd like to join us, please book your free ticket by clicking the link in today's bio.
