Quick facts about this statue: Atlas was created by the sculpture Lee Lawrie with the help of Rene Paul Chambellan. Installed in 1937. It weighs a little less than 7 tons and is the largest sculpture at the Rockefeller Center. ✨ What’s fun is because I did a little digging about this statue I learned a little about who Atlas(a leader of the Titans) is. I was never really into Greek Mythology, just knew the very basics, but it’s pretty cool to learn why Atlas ended up carrying the heavens on his shoulders. A punishment for the war against Zeus when he lost the battle. This was a fun little avenue of discovery. As a child having a teacher make you read something of no interest became a chore. However, as an adult stumbling upon the same subject became fascinating and is making me interested in learning more.
