Lynette Youson is a fifth-generation basket weaver who has been making decorative and utilitarian pieces for 45 years. Fanner baskets like this one—"Gullah Fanner Basket" (2002) in our @americanart's collection—are used to separate rice from its hulls.
Youson is from a Gullah community in South Carolina. The Gullah are a group of African Americans living in the Southeast who maintain cultural, linguistic and artistic traditions from their West African ancestors. #BlackHistoryMonth #BecauseOfHerStory
