When we see iconic portraits of Harriet Tubman, she's often much older. This photo allows us to see Harriet Tubman in a new way—in her mid-40s, not long after the end of the Civil War.

In addition to her work as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, Tubman served as a spy, cook, scout and nurse in the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1863, she led 150 Black Union soldiers in the Combahee Ferry Raid, rescuing more than 700 enslaved people. This made her the first woman to lead a major military operation in the U.S., and earned her the nickname “General Tubman.”

It took 34 years after Tubman's first application for her to receive a pension for her wartime service. In 1899, Congress passed a bill to compensate her but instead of the $25 per month that other Civil War soldiers earned, she received a lower monthly amount: $20.
