They are widely hunted for their meat, and their scales are also believed to have medicinal values in several Asian countries. The first picture shows a pangolin which was being offered for sale just outside a small airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The second image shows pangolin scales for sale on a market in western DRC. For many people, hunting and selling pangolins is just another way of trying to make ends meet. There are 8 pangolin species (4 in Africa and 4 in Asia) - their conservation status goes from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered.
