Very sad to post this. My friend Hal Holbrook has left us. To say he was a great actor is not enough. He was a great man. I took the film “Good day for it” when it was offered me because Hal was attached. To have scenes with him was a career highlight. We had lunch on the set and I remember him delivering a new monologue he was adding to his show “Mark Twain Tonight”. He was amazing just slipped right into it. That was back in 2011. I saw Hal again when I was honoured to be asked to host his autobiography release. I was the one asking the questions. The book was beautifully written and every young actor should read it. You see Hal did not set out to be a movie star. He just loved to act, so much so when he was in college he would take off on the road and do his one man show of skits, Shakespeare, and other monologues. He performed at Women’s Auxiliaries, Schools, lions clubs were ever he could get booked to perform. He had a box for makeup he made and it was during this time he developed “Mark Twain Tonight”. Later living in New York City he became quite the hit with that show leading to the CBS evening broadcast that was one of the biggest rating nights in TV history. Hal went on to do tv and film but always kept Twain alive and constantly worked on it. Shortly after the film we worked on his beloved wife Dixie passed away. I attended her memorial. Hal was graceful the way he honored her. The last time I saw Hal was the premiere of “Last Rampage” he loved the film. He kept saying it reminded him of a 70’s era film. I am very sad I will never see Hal again. He had a unique twinkle in his eyes I will never forget. I think that came from being an actor and truly loving his craft. If you would like to see Hal at his best watch “Into the Wild” directed by Sean Penn. R.I.P. Hal Holbrook
