On Wednesday, January 20, I was fortunate to be allowed access to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where I photographed this year’s historic inauguration. I photographed for 15 hours from a scissor lift, overlooking a sea of 200,000 flags covering the mall. By seamlessly combining individual photographs taken from dawn until nightfall—a process I created and call "Day to Night"— the image encapsulates the entire day, from President Donald Trump’s morning departure in Marine One, to the midday inauguration ceremony, and finally the evening’s memorial lights commemorating those lost to the pandemic. In the Day to Night series, cityscapes and landscapes are portrayed from a fixed camera angle, capturing fleeting moments of humanity and nature as light passes in front of the lens over the course of a full day.
