This tale of a Texas oil executive sent to buy out the town so it can be made over into an oil shipping station takes a turn when he falls in love with the place. The pub is still there and most importantly the iconic red phone booth (which fans idolize and which now is on the National Historic Register.) It's a good movie for our times, especially if you need a spot of sanity. The fate of the actual town is somewhat different. Many such villages and island retreats have lost their economic viability, the houses bought as second homes for occasional visitors. In Pennan that now means there are only 14 actual residents for some 54 houses. One local remembers when the village had 300 residents, shops, post office and school. And the Isle of Skye is particularly hard hit by the second home movement. Much of that came after the opening of the bridge that made access to the island easy.
