Photo by @smitashrm// I met Angela (name changed) in Migori County, western Kenya during an assignment for @humanrightswatch. Angela became pregnant when her trainee teacher offered to pay some of her primary school fees in return for sex. Her father tried to marry her off to suitors after she gave birth to her son, but Angela’s mother fought against this and supported her return to school.
Some countries in Africa expel pregnant girls from school and deny adolescent mothers the right to study in public schools and some lack clear policies. Most of the teenage mothers I met had to fight hard to continue education. Girls with children outside of wedlock are often perceived as bringing dishonor to their communities and are ridiculed, isolated and shamed. Angela was one of the brave ones who endured all these and became a role model for others.
