Charlotta Bass was the first African American woman to run for vice president in the U.S. She ran with Vincent Hallinan on the Progressive Party ticket in 1952, campaigning with the slogan: "Win or lose, we win by raising the issues."

She helped found the Progressive Party a few years earlier, after leaving the Republican Party because it failed to support civil rights legislation, and later denouncing both parties.

Bass was born in 1874, and was also one of the first African American women to own and operate a newspaper in the country. She published the California Eagle from 1912 to 1951. Becoming the largest African American newspaper on the West Coast, it fought against racial injustice, police brutality, restrictive housing, and white supremacy.

She was also an organizer of the activist group Sojourners for Truth and Justice. This video from our @nmaahc shows Bass at their 1952 Eastern Seaboard Conference. #BecauseOfHerStory #HiddenHerstory
