From this vantage point it was easy to see the henge, that being the raised earthen platform with a classic surrounding ditch cut deep into the underlying stone 5,000 years ago. The standing stones came later, added after the henge had already served as a focal point of the Orkney Neolithic community for some time. (Up on the distant hill is another henge that never got any stones at all.) Brodgar sits on the narrow strip of land separating Lochs Stenness and Harray, making it a natural centerpiece of the surrounding farming community at the time. The Ring of Brodgar is just one of the cluster of Stone Age sites that make up the UNESCO World Heritage site called Heart of Neolithic Orkney. (By the way, the kite was a bad idea.)
