Their work is truly inspiring. Pawsitive Change is a comprehensive, immersive rehabilitation program, operating in 4 California State Prisons and 1 female Juvenile Facility. It is the only program of its kind where rescue dogs live at a juvenile facility (that I’m aware of). Pawsitive Change is significant because of its curriculum, effectiveness, and immersive structure. The program began in January of 2016 at California City Correctional Facility as a pilot and quickly expanded to Corcoran State Prison, one of the most dangerous prisons in America. As of May 2019, the organization has graduated 300+ men, while rescuing and adopting out roughly 200 shelter dogs from high kill shelters and troubled regions of the world🗺 such as Korea, Iran, Thailand and Mexico. —16 of their graduates have been paroled and zero have returned to prison. The state and federal government saves between $50-100k per inmate, per year for every inmate who can remain out of prison. Already, their work has saved an enormous amount of money and can continue to do so on a massive scale if they are given the support they are looking for. Most of these men are violent offenders of varying backgrounds and gang affiliations. The majority who have been released (9) are currently employed as pet industry professionals—most, as dog trainers—making a great living for themselves. A few have started small business and a couple are already looking to hire employees! Not only are are they employed, they are giving back!
