This week's #WorkOfTheWeek is Veronica Ryan's 'Relics in the Pillow of Dreams' 1985, a sculpture partly inspired by the plants and fruits seen during her childhood in the Caribbean. 🌱
Many of the artist's works feature organic forms like seed pods and fruit, and here we see them carefully arranged and nestled within a larger pillow-like form. Ryan often uses soft textiles or pillows (perhaps influenced by her mother who was a skilled quilt-maker) to explore and unsettle the idea of comfort. The small objects resting in the hollows of the bronze sculpture entice the viewer to reach out and feel them, while the pillow-like form suggests a soft, nurturing surround. Ryan's sculpture is not presented on a pedestal but positioned on the floor, suggesting a grounding and a closeness to the earth and its processes.
